Luther William Nichols

Luther W.  Nichols

Coeburn, VA ~  Luther William Nichols, 89, went home to the Lord, Monday, May 9, 2011 at Hospice House of South Carolina in Landrum, South Carolina.
     He was a retired coal miner employed by Pittston Coal Company, former owner and operator of Nichols Floor Covering in Coeburn, a member of UMWA, a former police officer for the Town of Appalachia and a former member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge. Also a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He was also a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Coeburn, serving on several committees.
    Luther was the son of the late John W. and Mollie Nichols.
    Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Fulcher Nichols; one daughter, Patsy Grogan, Landrum, SC; one granddaughter, Kim Swayngham, Landrum, SC; one grandson, William Shaun Grogan, Clarksville, TN; 5 great grandchildren.

   Funeral services for Luther William Nichols will be held on Thursday,  May 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Coeburn with Rev. R. J. Rose and Richard Sharp officiating. Burial will  follow  at Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, Va. Visitation will be held Wednesday after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, VA

Coeburn, VA ~  Gary Wayne Moore, 40 passed away  Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Dandrege, Tennessee.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Randy D. Moore.
    He is survived by one son, Dalton Wayne Moore, Lexington, NC; mother, Shirley McElyea and husband, Steve, Coeburn; father, Johnny Wayne Moore, and wife, Betty, Coeburn; three sisters, Sherry Moore, Angie Hampton, and husband, Derrick, and Jennifer Meade, and husband, Randall all of Coeburn; several nieces. nephews, family and friends.

   Funeral services for Gary Wayne Moore will be held on Sunday May 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jimmy Large officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Saturday after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, VA.



Elsie May Harvey

Elsie May Harvey

Coeburn, VA ~ Elsie May Adkins Harvey, 87, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.
   She was the daughter of the late Urin Adkins and Ada Adkins; also preceeded in death by her husband, Randall Harvey; four brothers, Clifford Joe Adkins Sr., Emory "Three Hair" Adkins, Garland Edward "Baldy" Adkins and Freeman Adkins.
   Survivors include two sons, Danny Harvey, Eustis, FL and Gary Harvey, FL; one  brother, Donnie Adkins, Coeburn.

   A memorial service will be held at Banner Revival Center with Rev. R.L. Crawford officiating.



Arvel Elkins

Arvel Elkins

Tacoma, VA ~ Arvel Elkins went home to be with the Lord May 16, 2011, at the age of 91.
   Arvel was born and raised on the Elkins farm in Tacoma in 1920. He was a simple man who lived a long happy life. He graduated from Coeburn High School in 1939 and was a veteran of World War II. He participated in the liberation of Western Pacific battles and campaigns with several stars and metals. He has been a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 since 1964, and a long time member of the Tacoma Freewill Baptist Church and committed his life to serving the Lord.
   He and his wife Nellie owned and operated flower shops in Coeburn and St. Paul for many years. His favorite hobbies were gardening and raising rabbits.
   He was preceeded in death by his father, Clinton Elkins, mother, Hattie Jane
Elkins, brothers Estel, Aldon, Silas, Harry, sisters Margaret, Nancy, Coleen, a
daughter Martha Ann, and step-mother, Zelma Elkins.
   Survivors are, wife of 61 years, Nellie Elkins; daughters, Pam Nixon and Sherri Meade, son in laws Crockett Nixon and Brian Meade, grandchildren, Jessica Nixon, Haley Hale, Josh Kilgore, Erika Kilgore, Andrea Kilgore, Evan Meade and Tammy Graham, brothers, Albert, Claude, Paul, and Earl Elkins, and several
special nieces,nephews and friends.

   Services for Arvel Elkins will be conducted at Estes Funeral Home Chapel in Coeburn with Rev. Mitch Elliot presiding. Visitation will be Friday, May 20, 2011 at 5:00 P.M.- Family, 6:00 P.M.- Friends, followed by funeral service at 7:00pm. Estes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Jack D. Hamm, Sr.

Nora, VA ~ Jack Douglas Hamm, 60, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at his residence in Nora Virginia.
   He was the son of the late Fred E. Hamm and Mary W. Hamm; also preceeded in death by his wife, Melissa Hurt Hamm; sister, Joann Meadows and one brother, Kyle Hamm.
   Survivors include, two daughters, Diane Meade, Coeburn and Melinda Hamm, Nora; one son, Jack Douglas Hamm Jr., Coeburn; three sisters, Lu Shaw, Perry, VA, Jean Sartin, Coeburn, and Lois Hussey, Minnifee, CA.

   The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Meade-McClellan Cemetery on McClellan Town Road Coeburn. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave. NE, Coeburn, VA.

Appalachia, VA ~ Shonn Ray Gentry, Sr., 30, died Friday, May 20, 2011 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee.
    He was the son of the late Danny Ray Gentry.
    Survivors include his mother, Carol Gentry, a son, Shonn Ray Gentry Jr., Ohio one sister, Amanda Miles, Appalachia, VA.

   Visitation for Shonn Ray Gentry will be held on Tuesday May 24, 2011 after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home and funeral services at 7:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mia Smith officiating. Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday,  May 25, 2011 at Phillips Cemetery, in Pound, VA. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave., Coeburn, VA.

Honaker, VA ~ Angela Fay Lawson Stacy, 42, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011 at her residence in Honaker Virginia.
     She was preceeded in death by maternal grandparents, Ralph and Virginia Darnell; paternal grandparents, Harold G. Lawson and Ellen Yvonne Johnson, sister, Roberta Lawson.
    Survivors include, her husband, Travis David Stacy, two sons, Canaan David Stacy and Abram Michael Robert Stacy, all of Honaker, VA; parents, Rev. Robert Earl Lawson and Judy Ann Lawson; , four sisters, Crystal Cole, and husband, Ron, Wise, VA, Becky Lawson, Wise, VA, Myra Palmer and husband, Bud, Norton, VA and Wanda Henson, Manchester, KY; grandmother, Alice Fields, Norton, VA; 14 nieces and nephews and several aunts and uncles.

  Visitation for Angela Fay Stacy will be held after 6:00 P.M on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 and funeral services at 8:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donald Harding, Jr. Rev. Roger Jenkins officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, the family will leave the funeral home in procession at 11 A.M. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, VA. Pallbearers will be Ron Cole, Bud Palmer, William Palmer, Craig Darnell, Mark Boggs and Ronnie Burke.

Harry Lee "Snapper" Thomas, 38, was born on May 7, 1973 departed this life suddenly on May 28, 2011 in Atlanta, GA.
   He was proceeded in death by great grandmother, Dorthy Thomas Hill; grandparents, Jearldine Thomas Freeman, Robert Mooney, Ruth Davnport, Roscoe and Nada Livingston. Father, Boyce Little, uncles, Henry Thomas, Norman Thomas, Harold Livingston and William Davenport; aunt, Francis Thomas; cousins, Diane Barron-Fisher, Wallace (Butch) A. Foster, Jr. and Wendy Shorter.
   Survived by mother, Patricia "Penny" Little, Knoxville, TN; Tommy Livingston, Cincinati, OH; siblings, Darlene (Raymond) Holloway, Knoxville, TN, Chantilly (Eric) Snelling, Phoenix, AZ, Boyce (Terri) Little, Jr., Winslow, AZ, Melanie Huff, Charleston, SC, Tamar Brock, Birmingham, AL; children Desmond McBee, Athens, TN, Deja and Nasir Thomas, Ft. Pierce, Florida, Destin Thomas, Jasiah Michaux and Jamaical Michaux, all of Atlanta, GA. Devoted friend, Jamaica Michaux and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, too numerous to name.

   Services will be as followed: Family visitation Friday, June 3, 2011, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave. NE, Coeburn, VA 24230. Home going Celebration, June 4, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 12332 Crab Orchard Road, Coeburn, VA.
