Coeburn, VA ~ Janis Carol Hensley Ball, 75 passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton, Virginia. Janis was a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother and loved to work in the yard and garden.

    She was the daughter of the late Doug Hensley and Ruby Hensley; also preceded in death by a son, Douglas Wayne Ball; three brothers, J. D. Hensley Jerry Hensley and Curtis Hensley.

    Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Johnny Ray Ball, Sr.; a daughter, Ruby Fultz and husband, Terry, Big Stone Gap; three sons, James Ball and wife, Violet, Asheville, NC, Johnny Ray Ball Jr., Pound, and Roger Bruce Ball, Wise; three sisters, Wilma Bartley, Coeburn, Margaret Wolfe and Lena Edwards, Richmond, VA; 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation and Funeral services for Janis Carol Ball will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R. L. Crawford officiating. Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. until service time. Burial will follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Norton, VA ~ Noah Hagmon Thacker, Sr., 99 passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center in Wise, Virginia.

    He was the son of the late Volley Thacker and Rose Thacker; also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Anderson Thacker, and a daughter, Joanne Hensley and several other family members.

    Survivors include daughters, Gennett Strength, Murfeesboro, TN, Charlene Jackson, Norton, and Nina Buchanan, Coeburn; sons, Noah H. Thacker, Jr. and wife, Virginia and Lynn Thacker and wife, Lena all of Norton and Steven Thacker and wife, Kathy, Knoxville, TN; several grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

    Graveside services and burial for Noah Hagmon Thacker will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 1:30 PM at Laurel Grove Cemetery with Rev. Mike Lawson officiating. Coeburn, VA ~ Earnest E. Greear, Sr., 92 passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.

    He was a retired mechanic and former employee of Odle Motor Company.

    He was the son of the late Joseph Garfield Greear and Mary Winebarger Greear also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Ray Greear, a grandson, John Greear and several other family members. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Collins Greear; four sons, Earnest P. Greear Jr. , Coeburn, Estil Eugene Greear, Hopewell, Michael Greear, Dungannon, and Claude Anthony 'Tony' Greear, Wise; grandchildren, Angela Feller, Regina Lynn Campbell, Tina French, David Greear, Steve Greear and Sarina Mutter, great grandchildren, Megan, Dylin, Kateland, Katherine, AJ and Andrew, several great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Chilhowie, VA ~ Benjamen Neal Burton, 77 passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Valley Healthcare Center in Chilhowie, Virginia.

    Ben was a resident at Valley Health Care Cemter, H.F.A, Chilhowie since 1992. He was born and lived in Cranes Nest, Coeburn, Damascus, Chilhowie, VA. Ben was a decent, kind person and willing to help out anyone he could. He was a buddy and friend to his sister, Janet while growing up, they remained close. Ben attended church services regular and had a fine voice for singing, he was mentally challenged but was a good and gentle person people liked, if they took the time to know him.

   He was the son of the late John Burton and Kathleen Rose Burton; also preceded in death by sisters, Janet B. Anderson, Nita Burton Powers and Patricia B. Leon; niece, Erika Anderson and nephew, David Anderson.

    Survivors include a nephew, Arthur Powers of Florida and several other nieces,nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends he made in Chilhowie Home for Adults.

   Graveside services and burial for Benjamen Neal Burton will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Temple Hill Memorial Park with Rev. R. L. Crawford officiating. Visitation will be held Friday after 10:00 A.M. at Estes Funeral Home. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave., Coeburn, VA.

Coeburn, VA ~ Arvil Tommy Hill, 77 passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at his residence in Coeburn Virginia.

   He was the son of the late Tennessee Hill and Avis Stallard Hill; also preceded in death by Ricky Hill and Robert Charles Hill.

   Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Adkins, Goldie Hill, both of Coeburn, Elisha Hamilton, Big Stone Gap; eight sons, Michael Hill, Charles Hill, and John Hill, all of Wise, Tommy Joe Hill, Gary Hill, Lee Hill, all of Coeburn and Joshua Hill, Norton, Timothy Hill, Gate City; several grandchildren, several great grandchildren. Further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

   Arvil will be remembered and missed dearly by those who knwo him. Arvil loved all of his family and friends.

   A private family service will be held. Celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Estes Funeral Home to help with expenses. Arrangements are being handled by Estes Funeral Home, Inc., 114 High Ave. NE, Coeburn, VA.

    She was the daughter of the late Dan Collins and Cassie Mae Collins, also preceded death by her husband, Charles Keener; three sisters, Frankie Gibson, Juanita Gilbert, and Kathleen M. Riner; two brothers, Harold Collins and Willis Collins.

    Survivors include two brothers, Douglas Collins and wife, Brenda and Burnice Collins all of Coeburn; several nieces and nephews.

    Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Jean (Terry) Craiger and Nancy Gail (Dane) Tickles, both of Coeburn, Sherrie Love, Big Stone Gap, and Paula Marie Santos, Kingsport, TN; six sons, Bobby (Norma) Love, Larry (Debbie) Love, Cameron (Sherri) Love, and Stanley (Evelyn) Love, all of Coeburn, Michael (Angie) Love, Churchill, TN, and Keith (Angela) Craiger; a sister, Kathy (John) Hubbard, Norton, a brother, Ted (Marie) Smith, Coeburn; 26 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, several nieces, and nephews.

  He was a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company.

  He was the son of the late Thomas James Smith, Sr. and Ogla May Campbell Smith, also preceded in death by a son, Thomas James Smith, companion, Sarah Belle Hammonds, a sister, Betty Gibson/Willis, 4 brothers, Delmer James Smith, Sr.Thomas Eugene Smith Charles 'Buster' Smith and Gerald Smith.

  Survivors include four daughters, Janice Marie Sullivan, Morristown, TN, Regina Lynn Talford, Bulls Gap, TN, Margaret Ann Varble, Greenville, TN and Markeda Sue Hall, Norton, a son, Raymond Smith, Coeburn; three sisters, Susie May Jackson/Buchanan, and Mary Ann Bond, both of Coeburn, Ada Zurface, Wilmington, OH; four brothers, Rocky H.   He was a 36 year retired employee of VICC. He was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Sanders and Martha Victoria Sanders; also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Rutherford Sanders; a son, Randall Sanders; seven sisters, Eura Prince, Mary Magdalene Brickey, Lola Cooper, Ethel Spears, Cula Back, Cressia Keel and Elizabeth Mae Stansberry; four brothers, Arthur Ray Sanders, Jack Sanders, Alonzo Sanders and Hansel J. Sanders.

  Survivors include by a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie & Gary Lane, Coeburn; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bart & Gail Sanders, Coeburn, Jeffery & Donna Sanders, Wise, and Charles & Jody Sanders, Coeburn, a sister, Jean Laney, Hampton, VA; 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   He was the son of the late Ernest Eugene Bowman and Emma Bess Stapleton Bowman; also preceded in death by a son, Eric Eugene Bowman.

   Survivors include his loving wife, Sally Nann Kennedy Bowman, Morristown, TN; two daughters, Karen Lynn Bowman, Charleston, WV and Lori Ann Bowman, Elkton, MD.

   Survivors include a daughter, Salina Kennedy; a sister, Freda Bush, Big Stone Gap; A brother, Bobby Kennedy, Lyons, OH.; several nieces and nephews. Ronnie's wishes were to be cremated. Cremains will be interred at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, VA

  She was the daughter of the late Emmitt Bluford McCoy and Veta Lucille McCoy; also preceded in death by a son, Marvin Holbrook. Jr., three brothers, Luther McCoy, Lucas McCoy and Silas McCoy.

  Survivors include two sons, Jamie Holbrook and Everette (Angela) Holbrook, both of Coeburn; two sisters, Donna Knoskie and Vicky Ellis both of McClure, five brothers, Eddie McCoy, Morristown, TN, Darrell McCoy, Nora, Sidney McCoy, Abingdon, Chris Ellis, Marion, and Carl Warren Ellis, McClure; 8 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

  She was the daughter of the late Carlos Mullins and Hazel Cantrell Mullins; also preceded in death by her husband, Randy Sartin, 2 infant children, three sisters, Jo Bernice Mullins, Ruthie Kilgore and Trudy Stewart.

  Naomi is survived by a daughter, Jessica Mabe, Coeburn; two sons, Drek Sartin, Mendota and Jeromy Sartin, Pound; six sisters, Bertha Smith, and Frances Mullins, both of Wise, Rhonda Lewis, Pound, Nancy Whited, Bluff City, TN, Regina Mullins, Jonesville, and Carrie Ratliff, Coryton, TN; seven brothers, Merdie Mullins, Connie Mullins, Cossie Mullins, Roy Mullins and Bill Mullins, all of Wise, James Mullins and Johnny Mullins both of Pound; one grandson, Josha Mabe; three granddaughters, Chloe Sartin, Catelynn Mabe and Ryleigh Sartin; several nieces and nephews.

Coeburn, VA ~ Edna Kennedy Lawson, 89 was born January 24, 1929 and passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at her residence in Coeburn surrounded by her family.

Edna was of the Baptist faith, lived a beautiful life and was deeply cherished by her family.

  She was the daughter of the late H. B. Kennedy and Martha Holbrook Kennedy, also preceded in death by her husband, Louna Lawson, Sr. and a son, Terra Allen Lawson.

  Survivors include, two daughters,Vivian 'Vee' (Rick) Meadows, and Sharon (Gary) Slemp all of Coeburn; four sons, Louna (Donna) Lawson, Jr., Tim Lawson and Jonah Lawson all of Coeburn and Andrew (Robin) Lawson, St. Paul; sister, Wanda Lawson of MI; 13 grandchildren, 13 great grand-children, 1 great great grandchild, several nieces and nephews.

Coeburn, VA ~ Leon Eric "Red" Lindgren, 92 passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Virginia.

  He was a US Navy veteran of the WW II.

  He was the son of the late Edd Lindgren and Ruby Barker Lindgren, also preceded in death by his late wife, Mabel Corder Lindgren.

  Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Clay, and husband, Christopher Clay, Goochland, VA; sister-in-law, Mildred Kathleen Lindgren, St Paul; friend, Bernard Brickey; granddaughter, Marianna Clay, Goochland; nephew, Carl Lindgren, Jr.; caregiver, Tammy Howard.

Coeburn, VA ~ Steve Dennis Powers, 64 passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville Kentucky.

  He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Anita Hillman.

  Survivors include his wife, Edith Charlene Hill Powers, Coeburn; mother, Joan Powers, Norton; three daughters, Cheryl Dingus, Coeburn, Diane Steffey, Gate City, and Stephane Powers, Pikeville, KY; four sons, Jeffrey Hayes, Mickey Hayes, both of Coeburn, Randal Hayes, Castlewood, and Jared Powers, Pikeville, KY; two sisters, Kathy Burke, and Regina Tomko both of Norton, a brother, Rick Powers, Wise; several greandchildren, several great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

  She was the daughter of the late Geoffrey Adkins and Rubel Large Adkins.
  Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Hillman, Coeburn; a daughter, Sherry (Andy) Bishop, Wise; five sons, Mike (Debbie) Salyers, Wise, Scott (Teresa) Salyers and Richard (Reba) Hillman both of Coeburn, Jeff (Sarah) Salyers, Bristol, VA, and Gary (Shelia) Hillman, Morristown; a sister, Claudette Adkins, Bristol, VA; a brother, Julian (Shirley) Adkins, Wise; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

   He is survived by four sisters, Teresa Marie Wampler Hill, Fort Blackmore, VA, Rhonda Sue Lane, Nickelsville, VA, Billy Jean Salyers, Kingsport, TN and Debbie Ann Cassell, Fort Blackmore, VA; four brothers, Freddie Wampler and Charles Wampler, both of Ohio, Albert Rex Wampler Hill, Gate City, VA and Willie Martin Salyers, Jr., Kingsport, TN; beloved aunts, Marie Kennedy, Kingsport and Betty Bear, Detroit, MI; wonderful uncles, Lewis Sexton, Kingsport and Eddie Joe Sexton, NC.

   He was past president of Coeburn Little League, also a coach, a charter member and assistant chief of Sandy Ridge Fire Dept. A volunteer for 321 Downs Syndrome Day. He was the son of the late Leslie George Ketron and Minnie Belle Ketron, also preceded in death by siblings, Billy Joe Ketron, Sr. and Betty Alice Ketron.
   Survivors include his wife, Freda Gaye Hagy Ketron; two daughters, K.J. (Todd) Leonard, Bristol, VA and Mandy (Phillip) Mullins, Coeburn; two sons, Bradley (Jessica) Ketron, Wise, and Brett (Alyssa) Ketron, Roanoke, VA; a sister, Brenda (Doug) Horne, Coeburn; two brothers, Bob (Nancy) Ketron, Coeburn and Ben (Lois) Ketron, Chesterfield, VA; 3 grand- children, Noah, Sierra and Chelsea; great grandson, Kian Mullins; special nephew, Bobby Lee (Suzan) Ketron and a host of very special nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services for Bueford Gwinn Ketron will be held on Saturday March 24, 2018 at 7:30 PM at Mary's Chapel Church with Rev. Marty Puckett officiating. Burial will be Monday, March 26, 2018 at Temple Hill Memorial Park and the family will meet at Estes Funeral Home at 12 Noon and leave in procession to the cemetery.   Betty is survived by companion, Tommy Finch; three sons, Lee (Lisa) Fields, Jason (Cindy) Finch, and Tommy Finch, Jr. all of Coeburn; daughter, Miranda (David) Mullins, Coeburn; two sisters, Cora Smith, Harold, KY and Louise (B.L.)   She was the daughter of the late Grant Martin and Mintie Myram Dameron Martin and preceded in death by her husband, Coy Williams, son and daughter-in-law, Bransom Coy (Jean) Williams; also preceded in death by 7 brothers and 4 sisters.
  She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Sue (Winky) Powers, Dante, Delphenia Joyce (Dave) Peters, and Donna Lou Williams, Coeburn, a son, Troy Wayne (Judy) Williams, Coeburn; 15 Grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

  Eva will also be forever remembered by her extended family, a special friend, Tammy Huffman and friends Ray Nevel and Leo Brewer. 
  She was the daughter of the late John Corbett Mullins and Rettie L. Stanley Mullins, also preceded in death by her late husband, Curtis Adkins; three sisters, Gusta Buchannon, Marsha Smith, Belle Mullins and Frankie Adair Gilliam; three brothers, Everette Mullins, Ferdie Mullins, and J. C. Mullins.

  He was retired from General Motors Corp. 
  He was the son of the late Willard Isacc Hale and Samanatha Hale, also preceded in death by two sisters, May Ramey, June Vandyke; five brothers, William Harrison Hale, Ira Hale, Leon Hale, James "Jay" T. Hale and Samuel Hale. 
  Survivors include two sons, David R. Hale and Brian G. Hale both of Coeburn; a sister, Dorthy Amos, Vernon, MI; a brother, Charles Manley "Tic" Hale, Coeburn; special nieces, Gail and Mona.
